How to Design a Dance Team Uniform
While it may feel daunting, creating a dance team uniform for your group does not require a fashion degree, it only requires a little planning and a vision of how you want your team to look and feel when they're dancing together. A dance team uniform can be beneficial for many reasons, going above and beyond the aesthetic, though of course that's essential too.
Let's get into it - how to design a dance team uniform, what considerations you'll need to make and why it's sure to have a positive impact on dancers of any age.
Why is a Dance Team Uniform Important?
Studies show that uniforms help the wearer to embody the role. For example, if you dress like a doctor, you feel like a doctor, and the same goes for dancers. Having a dance uniform helps students to feel like professional dancers. When you put on a dance uniform, it helps signal to your brain that it's time to lock in.
A dance team uniform is important because it brings dancers together visually and mentally, helping to create unity, focus and discipline within the studio. The right uniform does more than look good; it supports freedom of movement, reduces distractions, allows teachers to better assess posture and alignment, and helps every dancer feel like an equal part of the team.

How to Prioritise Teamwork and Unity
Wearing a dance uniform alongside your friends and fellow students helps to really create a sense of unity within the dance studio environment. It can further create cohesiveness and a stronger bond between the class, which ultimately can help them to perform better and dance better as part of a group. A uniform helps dancers to gain a less individualistic approach and consider more how they look and move together as a group.
How Do Dance Uniforms Help Promote Discipline and Equality?
Within the world of dance, discipline is key, no matter whether you love ballet, modern, jazz or any other type of dance, discipline creates better dancers. Studies have shown that uniforms help with this; uniforms help dancers to respect the art of dance and stay disciplined. It also further creates a sense of equality among the group. Not only are dance uniforms a nice reminder to respect the studio and your dance teacher, but they also show that everyone in the class is equal. Equally important, equally worthy and equally part of the team.
Less Distractions, More Focus on What Matters
Great dance requires your body, mind and emotions to be working together in unison, which often takes complete and total focus. Having a dance uniform for your team that's comfortable, well-fitted and looks and feels good allows dancers to concentrate and give more focus to the thing that matters most, dance!
The right dancewear can also play an important role in a dancer’s safety while practising. Dancewear that is thoughtfully designed with movement in mind will reduce the risk of fabric getting in the way during turns, lifts or floorwork, supporting a full range of movement and lowering the risk of injury.
What You Need to Consider When Creating a Dance Team Uniform
Before you choose your core pieces to create a dance uniform for you and your team, there are a few essentials to consider.
Budget
First and foremost, it's important to know your budget, whether that's what you'll spend as a team collectively or for individual dancers. However, high quality dancewear doesn't need to cost the earth. Across our dancewear ranges, we focus on high-quality materials, thoughtful design and professional finishing, so you can be sure of quality without breaking the bank.
Purpose
Are you choosing a uniform with bright eye-catching colours, or are you choosing a training range that will bring uniformity and focus to rehearsals? You could also consider adding casual range add-ons: items like cosy hoodies and wide leg joggers can create a cohesive team look that keeps dancers warm and comfortable heading to and from the studio, as well as during warm-ups and cool-downs.
Team Colours
Do you have team colours? Classic, elegant colours like black or navy blue are perfect for rehearsal colours as they create a professional look, aiding you in keeping an eye on alignment during class. However, school dance groups may want to rep school colours - the choice is yours! At Squad dancewear, dance schools can choose from our bespoke Lycra brochure, which comes in a wide range of colours, or our in-stock uniform range, which comes in a range of set colour ways.
Adding a Logo
A logo is one of the most important details when creating a dance team uniform, as it instantly connects each piece back to your school identity.
At Squad Dancewear, we use high-quality digital transfer printing, also known as DTF printing. This allows us to print detailed, photo-style imagery in a way that adheres well to Lycra and stretch fabrics. It is our preferred method for dancewear because the logo can flex with the material, helping it last longer and move comfortably with the dancer.

Where to Start Choosing a Dance Team Uniform
Before choosing individual products, it helps to think about the kind of uniform range you want to create. Some dance schools prefer to start with a small, simple collection that feels cohesive from day one, while others want to build a larger wardrobe of options straight away.
At Squad Dancewear, we offer complete flexibility. Schools can choose from our in-stock uniform range, our bespoke Lycra range, our casual and accessories range, or mix and match pieces from all three. There is no minimum number of products required, which means your uniform can grow with your school over time.
For many schools, we recommend starting with a core collection before adding more pieces later. A simple starting range might include a jacket, shorts, leggings, two crop tops and two leotards. This gives dancers enough choice while still helping the uniform look consistent across the school. As your dancers and parents become familiar with the range, you can then introduce additional items such as dresses, skirts, ballet cardigans, hoodies, joggers or accessories.
Of course, if you already know you want a larger collection, that is possible too. The most important thing is choosing pieces that feel practical, wearable and aligned with your school’s identity.
Choosing Your Core Dancewear Pieces
A good dance uniform is usually made up of several core pieces that can be mixed and matched in various ways based on the needs of the performance or session.
Crop Tops
When choosing a dance crop top for a dance group uniform, it's important to ensure it offers a secure comfort and fit that will work for a range of different bodies. Opting for a style with more coverage is advisable, plus double straps so every dancer can feel confident and supported, even during high-energy routines.
Dance shorts
When it comes to shorts, an option like dual shorts and yoga shorts are ideal. With an inner short that helps you to feel secure, plus split sides that are flattering and fashion forward, along with an adjustable drawstring, these shorts work well for every dancer and are an ideal addition to a dance uniform. For those looking for more leg coverage, flares with a yoga-style waistband are a great option.
Leotard
A leotard is also a foundational item in any dancer's uniform. Leotards provide maximum freedom of movement for dancers. A well-fitted, comfortable leotard should feel like wearing a 'second skin'. Meaning no distractions, as it reduces the need to readjust as you would with baggier clothing. A leotard is also ideal for teachers to assess a dancer's posture. It helps you to clearly see the posture, alignment of the hips and position of the knees and ankles. As a leotard or unitard should be tight-fitted, it's important to opt for high-quality fabrics that won't become misshapen after a few washes.
Casual Range
Items like boxy t-shirts, hoodies and joggers also make excellent additions to a dancer's wardrobe. Not only will students want to wear them because they're style-focused, but they also function well as warm-up and cool-down gear, as well as for going to and from classes. The casual range has a stylish athleisure look, giving dancers the option to enjoy versatile layering.
Accessories
Items such as branded dance bags and water bottles can be the cherry on the cake when it comes to creating a stylish and cohesive dance uniform. Adding accessories takes your custom dancewear to the next level. Of course, bags and water bottles are necessary items for any studio environment, so why not add a little flair? Plus, when everyone in the class has the same uniform, right down to the water bottle, it helps everyone to feel unified as a collective.

Choosing Between In-Stock, Bespoke and Casual Dancewear
In-Stock Dance Uniforms
Our in-stock range is the quickest and most cost-effective option. These pieces are already in the building and ready to be branded with your school logo, meaning they can usually be delivered within approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
This is a great choice for schools that want uniform quickly, whether for exams, Christmas, birthdays, events or simply because parents are keen to get their hands on kit without a long wait. Although these are our quickest products, they are still made and finished using the same high-grade fabrics.
The in-stock range is available in set colourways, including black, black and white, black and red, black and purple, black and pink, and navy. As the products are ready-made, schools choose from the designs and colours available in this range.
Bespoke Dance Uniforms
Our bespoke range is handmade to order and is ideal for schools that want more choice when it comes to colours, styles and product types. Bespoke pieces usually take approximately 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery, although this can extend during peak periods such as the run-up to Christmas.
This range includes a wider variety of dancewear, such as ballet cardigans, dresses, skirts and other specialist pieces. Schools can choose from our available fabric colours, and we can send photos or fabric swatches where needed to help you find the best match for your school branding.
Many schools choose two colours for their bespoke uniform, although some designs allow for three. Details such as piping, panels and contrasting sections can help create a uniform that feels distinctive while still looking polished and professional.
Casual Dancewear and Accessories
Our casual range is designed to give dancers something they genuinely want to wear outside the studio too. Rather than relying only on standard branded hoodies, T-shirts and joggers, we have created a high-quality, fashion-led alternative that feels modern, comfortable and wearable.
Pieces such as our Boxy T, Baby T, oversized hoodie and wide-leg joggers have been designed by Squad, from the fit and fabric through to the final product. Think drop shoulders, oversized shapes, soft heavyweight fabrics and styles that feel closer to premium athleisure than traditional school uniform.
We also offer accessories such as costume bags and other useful extras, as well as more traditional options where requested. However, our focus is always on providing dance schools with stylish, high-quality kit that dancers feel excited to wear.
How the Squad Dancewear Uniform Process Works
Once you have an idea of the products you are interested in, the process is simple.
Schools usually start by completing a contact form on our website, letting us know what they are looking for. This might include the products they are interested in, their school colours, the number of dancers they have, when they would like to launch the range and whether they are looking for in-stock, bespoke, casual pieces or a mixture of all three.
From there, we can send over the relevant digital brochures so you can explore the options. Once you have chosen your preferred pieces, we create an invoice for your sample order. Sampling is an important part of the process, as it allows you to check the fit, style, quality and logo placement before launching the range to parents.
Some teachers keep the samples in the studio for dancers to try on, while others order pieces for themselves, their child or a student who will then buy the item from them. Schools can also choose whether parents order directly through Squad or whether the school places bulk orders and manages stock themselves.
Once we have your logo, ideally as a high-resolution file, we create digital visuals showing how the logo will look on your chosen garments. If you do not have a suitable logo file, we can recreate it for you free of charge. We will also advise on logo size and placement based on what looks best and what will work well with the stretch and movement of the garment.
We then create your private school website, complete with your logo at the top and digital images of your selected products. You will receive a link to review everything and request any changes before the samples are produced.
Once the samples have been approved, your school uniform page can go live. Parents can then order directly from Squad using your school’s private password, meaning the process is completely hands-free for teachers. We deal directly with parents, process the orders and manage any queries, which saves schools a huge amount of time.

How to Choose Dance Uniform Sizing?
Now you've selected your key pieces, it's important to get the sizing right. Ill-fitting clothing will not only affect the look, but more importantly, the function. Accurate measuring for each dancer is the first step in choosing the correct size. While age guides are certainly helpful, using exact measurements will help get a more precise fit. For growing dancers who fall between sizes, it's a good idea to size up.
While a snug fit is preferable when it comes to dancewear, having a little extra room to grow into will help the longevity of the garment. It's all about finding that perfect balance between a piece that fits flawlessly - but that will also stand the test of time.
Ongoing Support for Your Dance School Uniform
Once your first order has been received, your school will be passed to a dedicated Account Manager. They will help manage your account, answer any questions and support you if you would like to add or remove products from your range.
Your uniform does not have to stay the same forever. Many schools begin with a small core range and then build it over time as new products are released or as dancers and parents ask for more options. Your Account Manager will also contact you periodically to let you know about new products that may be suitable for your school.
This means your dance uniform can continue to evolve while still feeling organised, consistent and easy to manage.
Dance schools can also choose to add commission to their uniform range. This is usually £1 or £2 per product and must be the same amount across all products. It is completely optional, but many schools choose to include it as a simple way to generate additional income from uniform sales. Commission is calculated through our system and paid automatically each month based on sales.
Whether you are starting with a simple core collection or creating a full dance school uniform range, we make the process flexible, straightforward and stress-free. Choose from our in-stock, bespoke and casual ranges, add your school logo, approve your samples and launch your own private school shop for parents to order from directly.

Final Thoughts
Designing a dance team uniform goes beyond simply choosing outfits for the team to wear. It's about shaping identity, building confidence for young dancers, and creating connections. A dance uniform that is well considered supports learning and can strengthen the whole team.
From selecting your colours to adding your team logo, take the time to consider how your dance uniform will not only look and feel, but also how it will represent your team. At Squad Dancewear, we offer both ready-to-ship uniforms (usually around a 2–3-week turnaround) and a bespoke uniform service. That means dance schools can choose styles, colours and fits that actually suit their dancers, rather than trying to make one option work for everyone in the group.
At Squad Dancewear, we've got you covered with our dance uniforms. Many of our garments are handmade using top-quality fabrics by experienced machinists, with selected in-stock pieces ready to logo and selected casual/accessory items available to complete the range.
Whether you choose to order from our bespoke Lycra brochure, where all items are available in a variety of colours, or our in-stock uniform range in stylish set colourways, all items from either range can be branded with your logo or personalised.
